With little steps big journeys start

Year 7 students in their classroom in 2011
Students reaping the benefits of our help

During 2017-2018, Geelong Viqueque Friendship Schools Inc supported Mary MacKillop International’s one-year training program. This funding allowed 5 teachers from Viqueque to participate. It allowed 150 children to receive quality education in the classroom and to assist  in creating a positive future for themselves and their community.

This teacher training program is particularly vital in Timor-Leste, where there is only a 58% literacy rate, and where 75% of teachers have only had education to the secondary level.

To place the challenges in context these facts were published in mary MacKillop International’s 2018 Annual Report:

  • One in five students repeat the same grade every year, and class sizes are increasing.
  • Many children have not had the opportunity to become fully literate in their national language Tetum.
  • Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) data from 2010 showed that at the end of grade one, 70% of children could not read a single word that was presented to them.

Improving the skills of teachers through innovative and ongoing training is one of the biggest investments a country can make to improve learning outcomes among children.

Help the Geelong Viqueque Friendship Schools provide ongoing training and support to current Timorese teachers teachers from remote areas. This training equips them with the skills, knowledge and resources to effectively deliver the national curriculum to their students and ensure they receive quality education in the classroom.
